A Little Starry Sky, Sent in an Envelope
As cities grow brighter with modern development, stars have become harder to see.
We look up at the night sky less and less—but what if you could send someone a sky full of stars, sealed in an envelope?
“Star Filled Envelope” is a romantic paper product that reveals a breathtaking starry sky when you peek through the opening.
Tiny holes punched into black paper, layered with translucent tracing paper, create the gentle twinkle and depth of the night sky.
The star pattern is based on the winter sky in Niigata at 8 p.m., and you can even spot Orion shining in the distance.
To experience the magic, fold the envelope straight down the middle and hold it close to your face—make sure no light enters from the sides.
The darker it gets, the more brilliantly the stars will shine.
It’s a quiet moment of wonder, whether enjoyed on your own or gifted to someone special with a handwritten note tucked inside.
This envelope design was awarded the Excellence Prize in the Paper Card Design Competition 2015, hosted by Fukunaga Print Co., Ltd. and its project Kami no Kōsakusho (Paper Workshop).
The winning idea came from designer Megumi Tsukada, under the theme “Expressing Emotion.”
“There were already so many cards, notebooks, and stationery made of paper. We had been intentionally avoiding that area—
but when we thought again about the meaning of ‘writing and giving,’ we realized how many people truly care about that.
That’s when we started to wonder: What if we could reinvent what a card could be?”
With that thought, “Star Filled Envelope” was born.
The back of the envelope has space for a short message, and you can add your own letter inside.
A round instruction sheet is included on the reverse side of the package—just cut it out and tuck it in for the recipient.
It can be sent as nonstandard size mail with a stamp .
A quiet gift of stars.
Send a moment of calm and wonder to someone’s day—with just a simple envelope.
