Interview: About the new product "COLOR" | Maho Motoyama

A geometric 3D box made from a single piece of paper that you can enjoy assembling colors and shapes.

What made you decide to create this product?
This is because I wanted to create a paper product that can be enjoyed both during the assembly process and after assembly, by displaying it.

Where does the product name (COLOR) come from?
We named it "COLOR" because you can choose from five different colorful boxes. (We hope to continue making boxes in new colors and different materials in the future.)

What did you pay particular attention to when processing the paper?
We designed the product with the shape of the glue tabs to make assembly easy, the folds (perforations) to create neat edges, and the layout of the unfolded diagram to make assembly easy.
In addition, to make it easy for both adults and children to assemble, we have created diagrams and assembly videos that explain the assembly order.

Please tell us the process leading up to commercialization.
The staff at ‘Fukunaga Print’ Works were shown some of their own creations, in addition to the paper sculptures they had made in the past. Among them was a box made from the same Kenran paper as this product. They thought, "Are geometric sculptures something that both adults and children can enjoy assembling?" and so a project to commercialize it began.
They understood our desire to "proceed while checking the actual product," and frequently sent us samples and photos, and after repeated meetings and prototyping, we were able to bring the product to market.

How did you feel when you first picked it up after it was finished?
The crisp texture of Kenran paper, combined with the shape of this product, has created a new product that is both hard and light.

What are the key points you want to emphasize in your products ?
To make assembly easier, we have prepared a video, written the assembly order on the website, and the folds are perforated to make it easier to fold neatly with sharp edges. We have paid particular attention to making it easy for everyone to assemble the product neatly.
We tend to imagine a box as a rectangular prism, but we created variations in shapes that are different from that image.

How do you want to enjoy it?
I hope you enjoy assembling and displaying it.
I think you'll enjoy combining different colors and creating different looks.

What paper textures or finishes would you like to try in the future?
Paper of different colors and materials (transparent, glitter, various textures)
Large processing, fine processing

What is the appeal of paper and paper processing?
Paper is the most familiar material, and I think its appeal lies in its ease of trial and error.
I feel like it makes me want to make things, like folding, cutting, pasting, and painting.
